Sunny Side Up for Maldives Company as CBL Comes To Its Aid

A diverse IT business provider based in Male, Maldives, Digital Media Center Pvt Ltd (DMC) provides world-class business software solutions, service and support to organizations throughout Maldives. As such, the safekeeping of data is key to ensure the smooth operations of the company.

In August 2008, DMC was dealt with an unexpected blow when its RAID system crashed due to a sudden power failure. The first thing the IT staff did was to get in touch with the company maintaining its computers in the hope that the vendor could rectify what DMC personnel thought was simply a glitch due to the power shutdown. However, the problem was larger than anyone had anticipated – critical data was lost when the RAID was rebooted.

The problem was larger than anyone had anticipated – critical data was lost when the RAID was rebooted.

Describing the situation, Hassan Mohd, Managing Director, DMC said, “All the data stored in the server, crucial information of our customer’s outlets, were lost. For most of the other computers, all the crucial information such as accounts, statistics, and databases were at risk.”

Recognizing the urgency for the data to be retrieved in order to resume operations, Hassan scoured the Internet and found CBL Data Recovery Technologies. He quickly made an online submission to CBL about the data loss situation DMC had on its hand. CBL Singapore promptly contacted him and told him the possibility that the data could be recovered. Without delay, Hassan booked and took the next available flight to Singapore to personally deliver the crashed drives of DMC’s RAID to CBL. The technicians at CBL’s Singapore laboratory worked round the clock with only one goal – to salvage the drives and recover as much data as possible. Less than 24 hours later, Hassan received great news – CBL had recovered the data from DMC’s RAID.

“I never thought we would have to face a situation of losing our data overnight, but it happened and it can happen again to us, to anyone or to any organization. We are truly grateful to CBL not only for retrieving the data but also their hospitality. The staff members were very patient and reassuring. They really helped calm us down during a difficult period,” said Hassan.

By sharing Digital Media Center’s data recovery experience, Hassan hopes that more companies can realize the reality and severity of data loss.

“There are no data recovery service providers here in Maldives. That’s why DMC would like to share its experience with other companies here so that if the unexpected were to happen, they know who they can call,” concluded Hassan.

Hassan Mohd, Managing Director, Digital Media Center happily leaves CBL’s laboratory in Singapore with his recovered data. “…We are truly grateful to CBL not only for retrieving the data but also their hospitality.”

CBL Data Recovery recommends that companies which experience a RAID failure similar to DMC:

  • Do not panic.
  • Turn the system off immediately and get assistance, if a drive is making unusual mechanical noises,
  • Do not replace the failed drive with a drive that was part of a previous RAID system.
  • Have a valid backup before making hardware or software changes.
  • Try to restore the backup to secondary system rather than the failed system.
  • Do not run volume repair utilities on suspected bad drives.
  • Do not run defragmenter utilities on suspected bad drives.
  • Do not attempt to repair the failed device or array.
  • Label the drives with their position in the RAID array and
  • Call CBL 24×7×365.
